    Perfect explanation. Sometimes it can be a bit unsatisfying to be told that it's "just an exception" or "that's the way it is now" but knowing that it SHOULD be following the rules but that over time things changed in the language is honestly a good explanation. Languages change and evolve over time and although it can be frustrating for beginners to see these rules they were just taught be broken, it is very interesting regardless! Thank you again for the explanation. I'm very satisfied with the information!

    Wow! Thank you! It's funny because we have both sounds in Philippine languages but only represented by "o". /facepalm. 어 is very close to what we call "open-o" and 오 is close-o. We only have the English "o" in English. It's easier now that I made the connection with our own sounds instead of the English sound. It's now familiar. Thank you so much!

  • @linkow
    @linkow Месяц назад

    I don't think 어 sounds like /ʌ/ (as in hug) at all. But it sounds like /ɑ/ in American accent (the "au" in "caught" or "ou" in "bought"). And 오 sounds like a short /o/ like the "o" in "told". You can practice with the words "sought" (어) and "sold" (오).

    For anybody wondering what the difference is between 바 and 파 when not in between two vowels/following a consonant, the primary signifier Seoul korean speakers use to distinguish them is actually the tone of the vowel. Vowels following word-initial ㅍ are pronounced higher than vowels following word-initial ㅂ. If you aspirate both the same, then they will look to the tone of the vowel to distinguish.
